The basics
A steel sheet pile is a long, narrow plate rolled into a Z or a U profile, with an interlock along each edge so individual piles can clip together. Driven to refusal with a vibratory or impact hammer, they form a continuous wall — structurally continuous, hydraulically continuous, and re-extractable if you need them back.
The profile geometry matters. Z-sections handle higher bending moments and are preferred for permanent retention. U-sections are easier to install in soft ground and are the default for cofferdams. Choosing between them is a structural decision, not an aesthetic one.
What they replace
A sheet pile wall replaces some combination of: shoring, sheeting, dewatering, and in many cases the permanent retaining structure itself. On a tight urban site, that is the difference between four trades on the schedule and one.
Sheet piles condense four trades into one wall — retention, dewatering, shoring, and finish, in a single continuous assembly. — UHUSA practice notes
Coastal and waterfront
The classic application is at the waterline: seawalls, quay walls, bulkheads, cofferdams. The interlock is watertight enough to permit dewatering inside the perimeter, which is the whole point of a cofferdam. With proper coatings — galvanizing, epoxy, or cathodic protection — service life in seawater is measured in decades, not years.
Deep excavations and basements
On urban sites where every inch of the property line matters, sheet piles can be driven right at the lot boundary and the basement excavated up to the wall. There is no separate shoring system to remove later. If the design calls for the wall to stay, it stays; if not, the piles can often be pulled and reused.
Sustainability and reuse
Steel is recyclable to begin with, and sheet piles add a second sustainability angle: extractability. A pile driven for a temporary cofferdam can be pulled at the end of the job and put back on a truck. Across a portfolio of projects, the same set of piles gets multiple lives. That is rare for a structural component of this scale.
